چکیده

We study the effect of intersegment interactions on the effective bending and stretching moduli of a semiflexible polymer chain with a finite stretching modulus. For an interaction potential of a screened Debye-Hückel type renormalization of the stretching modulus is derived on the same level of approximation as the celebrated Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman result for the bending modulus. The presence of mesoscopic intersegment interaction potentials couples the bending and stretching moduli in a manner different from that predicted by the macroscopic elasticity theory. We advocate a fundamental change in the perspective regarding the dependence of elastic moduli of a flexible polyelectrolyte on the ionic conditions: stretchability. Not only are the persistence length as well as the stretching modulus dependent on the salt conditions in the solution, they are fundamentally coupled via the mesoscopic intersegment interaction potential. The theory presented here compares favorably with recent experiments on DNA bending and stretching. ∗To whom correspondence should be addressed. E-mail address: [email protected].

Molecular Dynamics Investigation of The Elastic Constants and Moduli of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Determination of the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes is an essential step in their applications from macroscopic composites to nano-electro-mechanical systems. In this paper we report the results of a series of molecular dynamics simulations carried out to predict the elastic constants, i.e. the elements of the stiffness tensor, and the elastic moduli, namely the Young’s and shear mod...

On the Elastic and Viscous Properties of Media Containing Strongly Interacting In-plane Cracks

We calculate elastic moduli and viscosities for media containing strongly interacting in-plane shear cracks. The cracks are randomly oriented or aligned, with equal length or a logarithmic size distribution. Our results from both a boundary element and a finite-element method suggest that the average moduli are best approximated by a differential, self-consistent model (DEM). Thus crack-tocrack...

Extremely Stretchable Strain Sensors Based on Conductive Self‐Healing Dynamic Cross‐Links Hydrogels for Human‐Motion Detection

Extremely stretchable self-healing strain sensors based on conductive hydrogels are successfully fabricated. The strain sensor can achieve autonomic self-heal electrically and mechanically under ambient conditions, and can sustain extreme elastic strain (1000%) with high gauge factor of 1.51. Furthermore, the strain sensors have good response, signal stability, and repeatability under various h...

A Stretchable Graphitic Carbon/Si Anode Enabled by Conformal Coating of a Self-Healing Elastic Polymer.

A high-capacity stretchable graphitic carbon/Si foam electrode is enabled by a conformal self-healing elastic polymer coating. The composite electrode exhibits high stretchability (up to 88%) and endures 1000 stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain with detrimental resistance increase. Meanwhile, the electrode delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 719 mA g(-1) and good cycling stabi...

Mechanics of ultra-stretchable self-similar serpentine interconnects

Electrical interconnects that adopt self-similar, serpentine layouts offer exceptional levels of stretchability in systems that consist of collections of small, non-stretchable active devices in the so-called island–bridge design. This paper develops analytical models of flexibility and elastic stretchability for such structures, and establishes recursive formulae at different orders of self-si...
